There are multiple options for people ages 65 or older, or on disability for more than two years. See brief descriptions of your options below:
Traditional Medicare (Part A & B)
Provides coverage for hospital and doctor visits, but it typically does not cover all of needs. There is no max out-of-pocket for Part B (80/20 plan), so you are responsible for 20% of the bill, period. Having a Medicare Supplement or Medicare Advantage plan can protect you and your family from unexpected and increasing medical expenses.
Medicare Supplements (MediGap Plans)
Supplemental Policies are provided by insurance companies to fill in the gaps of expenses not covered by traditional Medicare. These plans often have low monthly premiums and limited out-of-pocket expenses. Every facility that accepts Medicare will process your Medicare Supplement Plan – meaning that you will likely have more physician options. Supplements are best for people who have assets they want to protect.
Medicare Advantage (Part C)
You may elect to have Medicare Advantage, which allows a private insurance company to manage Part A & B with additional benefits. The cost is often a $0 premium, and you can get medical, prescription, fitness, dental, and vision all on one plan. The downside? There are often limited physician networks and pre-certification requirements are common.
Medicare Prescription Drug Plans (Part D)
Part D helps cover the cost of prescription drugs. There are many Part D plans available depending on your zip code, and your drug formulary (dictates which medicines are covered under your plan) is subject to change annually. It is important to review your Medicare Prescription coverage every year.
